In the clause "he was to suffer", if was is a linking verb, how can "to suffer" be a direct object? Don't you need an action verb to have a DO?

This is the sentence:
Being led to execution, he came to a river, which was divided at the place where he was to suffer, and the stream was very rapid.
and you are asking about the Answer Key, I am sure. It says in the parsing table:
was - linking verb to suffer - direct object
And I agree with you that this is not correct.
"was" cannot take a direct object.
"To suffer" is a predicate nominative.
He (subject) was (linking verb) : "to suffer" (predicate nominative/subject complement).
I am sorry. I will make a note of this.

Thanks. And, yes, I was asking about the answer key.
