I have the opportunity to purchase a really old version of Harvey's Elementary. Is this okay to use? I wondered if the language has actually changed any from then. It's dated 1865 or somewhere close.
Thanks

Julie,
I haven't seen the old/more original version of Harvey. I do know that Mott Media took the old Harvey and updated it so it was using modern conventions for punctuation, spelling, and word usage. There are some differences which sneak in on language over time.
That is not to say that you cannot use an older version of Harvey and still benefit from it. Only, you would have to have a modern language handbook available to check conventions for language usage, syntax, spelling, and punctuation. Also, if you are trying t o coordinate with what we're doing in Homer, I don't know if the sections would fit. That you could find out by calling Mott Media and asking which Harevy version they did their update from.
1865 is quite old. I collect old books, if I were you, I'd shelve it as an antique and buy the newer version. Mott sells the Harvey's very cheaply, and if you tell them you're a homeschooler there is a substantial discount. I think each of my Harvey's Elementaries was less than $8 or so.
Just my thoughts,
Lene
