Hello.
I have a question regarding starting a 7th grader, who has already worked through R&S 6 grammar and diagramming, with Harvey's. I plan to do a quick run through of CW-A for a few weeks, then move to CW-H with him. I like the idea of the grammar notebook.
But here is my question. Part 1 of Harvey's Elementary Grammar seems too "easy" for him (even if Harveys introduces some new terminology). What would you suggest? Would you have him:
1) go through Elementary anyway from the beginning(since he's doing CW-H), sequentially but quickly? Would you have him work from lesson 1 to 130 IN ORDER?
2) go through it, combining parts 1 and 2 AT THE SAME TIME to give both exposure and a higher level of imformation (what I mean here is to do ALL noun parts in Harvey's Elementary, from both parts 1 and 2, before moving onto the next part of speech)?
3) start with the upper level Harvey's book? The problem I see here is that he would have no foundation from the Elementary book, but I can't tell if that's necessary.
It's hard to start an older child sometimes because I don't know where things overlap!

I would choose 3) Harvey's Elementary and Havrey's Revised are very similar in set up and sequence. The Revised has much repetition and just more expansion and more expectations for its students. An older beginner, especially 7th grade and up, could easily start in the Revised, even with no previous exposure to grammar. So since your student has had lots of solid grammar through R and S, including diagramming, I am sure he would do well. Work a month ahead in the Revised (possibly skipping the section on Orthography, which is sounds and spelling and not related directly to grammar) and then start CW Homer and you should be just fine.
