I have just begun CW Aesop with my 9yo DS. I feel pretty confident with the program in all areas except word analysis.
The directions are to analyze and mark words according to WRTR. However, I don't have the book. Should I pick up a copy or can I use our current spelling program (Spelling Workout)? If I can use SWO, how would I go about marking the words?
Thanks for any help! Jeanne

No, don't buy WRTR. For those who have it, mark the phonograms accordingly.
If you don't have it, all you need to do is a simple spelling analysis.
The student needs to recognize each syllable and each sound that he learned in phonics.
So for a word like
telephone
he would divide it into syllables, then he would look at each vowel and decide why it's a long or a short vowel sound, why the final "e" is not pronounced, etc.
It's an important exercise, especially for a young reader who is still keeping up with basic decoding skills, but it's not important enough to buy WRTR for, nor important enough that I would have an older student work on it , if he otherwise were an excellent speller.

Yes! Thank you so much!
So, in The Hare and the Tortoise, I pick out the word "boasting". DS would point out that it has two syllables and where to divide the word. We might talk briefly about adding the suffix -ing. I could also review vowel digraphs with the *oa*. I'm on the right track???
THANKS! Jeanne

;D Yes, I think so. You want to look at all the unique rules that make us pronounce the word like we do. This is helpful for reading aloud and for spelling both.
You're on the right track,
