I am planning to buy Harvey's Grammar this spring to use with the CW program, and am wondering which book I should buy: Harvey's Elementary Grammar or Harvey's Revised Grammar.
We are half way through CW-Homer and will be working on the first Poetry book this summer and continuing with Homer in the fall. The two who are working in this now will be in grades 5 and 7. (Both will have completed Shurley English level 7.) The Mott Media website says the Elementary Grammar is good for grades 4-6 and the Revised for grades 7-9, which is why I'm unsure of which one is best for us. I've never seen either book in person. Do all the CW books use the Elementary Grammar book, or do the more advanced books (such as Diogenese) use the Revised Grammar?
I also have two more little ones who will be coming up to CW-Aesop in a few years, so I don't mind buying the Elementary Grammar now even if I'll need the Revised book in a year or two for the older ones.
Thanks for your help.

We recommend the Elementary for going through CW, but if you have older students with a lot of grammar background, buy the Revised.
The two books are surprisingly similar. They cover the same topics in the same order, almost, and so you can really use either.
The Revised goes into more detail on most topics, but not significantly more.
We will wrap up all the grammar in CW Diogenes - Chreia, our next book. It will be written so that you can use either Harvey's to wrap up grammar.

Thank you. I will go with the Revised, then, if I can find it. Would you consider Level 7 of Shurley English to be a lot of grammar? All I know is that my children (and I) know considerably more than I learned in school! Now, as I do my long-term planning, how many levels of CW will there eventually be? I want to be sure my 12 yo will be able to finish before she graduates. At this point we will do the second half of Homer this coming year and then Diogenese- Maxim the next - she will be in grade 8 and her brother in 6. Thanks for your help. Heather

How much is a lot? It all depends on where you started from. Shurley 7 is a good founcation to build on because the students know what they have been taught well. Harvey's goes into more detail in parsing than Shurley does, but everything they have learned already will stand them in good stead.
If you look at the links above the Classical Writing title bar you will see "which books to buy". Click on that and you will see all our levels listed.

I would like to participate in the Summer Harvey's Grammar Class. I purchases Harvey's Elementary Grammar and Composition Book by Motts Media; is this the correct book? Thank you!
