Next year I will be working with a ninth grader who has had no writing instruction and is very weak in this area, and she reads below grade level as well. I'm wondering the best way to get her up to grade level.
Thanks,
Zaynab

Zaynab,
Thank you for your question. I would need more specific information of what she is capable of in writing and reading, exactly what her skills are and the reason that she is behind grade level before I would feel comfortable steering you in any direction. So if you could tell me a little more...
Thanks, Lene

She's reading and writing at about a 5th grade level. Social and behavioral problems led her mother to pull her out of school two years ago with the intention of homeschooling her, but there's been very little instruction since then. She's regressed without practice. Her low skills are more due to lack of instruction, help, etc. than any learning disabilities or delays. She has little to no grammar background, and would need to start with the very basics of writing. However, I don't want it to seem "young," and since she's motivated to work hard, I expect her to improve quickly. I hope that helps?

If you think our program a good fit for her, I would recommend starting with Aesop B's workbook to give her the basics of grammar and writing (it's 18 weeks). Then move into Homer for Older Beginners, (22 weeks) skipping the first 4 or 5 weeks which she will have gotten a good foundation for in Aesop B.
