I bought the 1st ed. a few years ago and used it w/my older dd. Since a discount was offered on the 2nd ed. for those who own the 1st, I decided to go ahead and purchase it. What a difference!! The layout is MUCH better, and it is MUCH easier to pick up and use right away. I am really looking forward to beginning this w/my younger dd. A heartfelt "Thank-you!" to the authors for making such fine improvements to a great program. You have made it much more accessible!

Thank you for letting us know. The first edition of Maxim was much longer, and much material has been bumped into the next years. It is good to know that this material is accessible.
The most difficult thing about writing Classical Writing is accessibility. We can create lessons and lesson plans for how to learn a particularly difficult rhetorical concept, but it has to be transformed into a format where the 'average' homeschool mom of a middle schooler (speaking Diogenes and up) can USE it and teach it to her kids. That is what we want to be all about. By the grace of God!!

This is my first year using Classical Writing. I literally read the guides (Aesop, Homer and Diogenes Maxim, and Poetry) from cover to cover. I love the series. I never bought a writing program before, because they all kind of repeated the same stuff over and over again. This program really will teach one how to write. I am very excited.
I see that you will be offering online tutorials for an accelerated Diogenes. Is there a way I can do this myself at home with my 9th grader. Right now I have her sharing Aesop and HOmer for the older beginner. I think this will be too slow for her. She loves to write and is eager to go with this program like me. However, I think she is ready for more than what I have right now.
Suggestions??

Siobahn,
I will just tell you what my basic plan is for the online tutorial, and then you can judge whether you can do it at home. The key is going to be how well you understand the material and can "see" what can be combined. I am hoping that eventually my lesson plans from this year can be made into a course plan or supplement for home use, but that is a project which is several years off.
I plan to spend 2-3 weeks reviewing material from Homer. Then, I will do Maxim and Chreia, sometimes sequentially, and sometimes simultaneously. For example, when we do the lessons on maxims, we will also do the lesson on chreiai. When we work on cause paragraphs from Maxim, I will incorporate the lessons from Chreia.
At least that is my plan for now. I will adjust if I find the class needs it.
I hope this helps.

Is it the 2nd edition student workbook that is laid out better and easier to use or is that the core? How easy is the 1st edition workbook to use?
Thanks.

Do you have a 1st edition? The easiest way to see the differences in layout would be to go to the preview of the 2nd edition workbook at Lulu. (I just changed it to show a typical week, so if you've already looked ... look again.) The 2nd edition student guide has daily overviews, whereas the first edition just had weekly overviews. The student guide/cores won't mix and match between the editions, either. We think the 2nd edition guide is much easier to use.

A lady had a 1st edition available so thus my question. But I definitely want the 2nd edition. I'll go check out LuLu again. When I looked before I couldn't get a real good feel for it.
