I am considering using CW for my two sons. My sixth grader is a very reluctant writer. However, when pressed to write, his work is quite good. His spelling skills are terrible. In contrast, my 7th grader willingly writes volumes (way to much) with numerous run on sentences and punctuation errors. We have used Shurley English with good results, but they don't seem to able to take what they've learned and apply it to their other school work.
Ideally, I would like to place them both in the same level. What do you recommend?

I would place them in Homer A, as you want to keep them together. What program are you using to work with your son on spelling? The editing taught in Homer A addresses run-on sentences, and the suggested grammar will take you through punctuation.

I would go with Older Beginners. Move at a pace that challenges without discouraging either one. Be sure to continue with a spelling program, and be sure to let them type their essays and use a spell checker as well.
My reason for mentioning the spell checker is that you want to separate the spelling pains as much as possible from the writing process so a person who struggles to spell is not also discouraged in the writing process as a result of his spelling difficulties. Bad spellers can still learn to be wonderful writers!!
