Kathy Weitz is offering online tutorials for middle and high schoolers this fall using the Diogenes books. Our purpose is to assist the home educating parent in providing writing instruction for middle school to high school students. These tutorials are structured both for students who have completed the Foundations levels of Classical Writing and also for middle and high school students who are new to Classical Writing and who need to complete the Foundations and Intermediate levels in one school year. For the 2008-2009 school year, we are offering two tutorials: • Diogenes: Maxim Beginning essay analysis and writing offered to students 7th grade and up. This course will cover the fable, narrative, and maxim levels of the progymnasmata, and apply them to the modern five paragraph essay. • Diogenes: Maxim and Chreia Accelerated Pace Essay analysis and writing offered to students 9th grade and up. This course will cover the fable, narrative, maxim, and chreia levels of the progymnasmata, and apply them to modern five paragraph and expository essays. For more information, and to register, visit our online tutorials webpage at home.att.net/~classicalwriting/OnlineClasses.htm

Kathy- I've had the best intentions (ever since the initial notification of your class hit my email box) of letting you know how enthusiastic I am about this online class you're offering. I'm head over heels in love with CW, but I can't even begin to tell you how many times I've longed for "someone else" to teach it. That that "someone else" is YOU, is tremendously exciting to me!!
I'm thinking my son (who turns 12 in Nov) is probably a half year to a year away from readiness to tackle Diogenes material. Do you know if you'll be offering this same level class again next year? Or is your plan to then move on to the next level. I'm very aware that as a homeschool mom yourself, you have limited hours in any given day (I'm assuming you're offering this class this year because you'll be going thru it yourself with your own children??).
Anyway, just wanted to send a "hip hip hoorah" your way and wish you many blessings in this endeavor...

Thanks Susan, for your kind words! As far as future plans go, we will have to see...I don't want to promise and not come through. But I am definitely open to the possibilities. The class offerings will probably be dependent on demand, but also on the needs of my own children - I'm being honest here My daughter will be doing Chreia next year, so there is a good chance that will be offered. I have one who will begin Homer next year, so I am thinking that might be a possibility. I also do think that Maxim is a good time to start in CW for older students, so I can see that being an ongoing offering. I know that I have completely evaded a straight answer here, but I am so grateful for your input. Watch for notice in the winter of this school year...I may even do a poll at that point. Kathy

Actually, winter (December?), would give me plenty of time to prepare for next year if you're thinking you'll be moving on to the next level. I would probably then begin my son in Maxim in January to have him ready for your Chreia class the next year. Of course, if there's plenty of demand to do another Maxim and you're willing, I'm delighted to sit back and wait for your class ... :-)
Thanks, Kathy!
