I am homeschooling children who are currently 14, 11, and 8 years old. Their respective grades in the fall will be 9, 7 and 3. I have been concentrating on Latin, on the theory that this would give enough language skills but have realized that they need more. The high recommendation in _The Latin-Centered Curriculum_ has persuaded me to try CW. I plan to start the youngest in Aesop in the fall. I think that I should start the oldest right away with the older beginners program.
I am not sure what to do about the middle one. She was diagnosed with learning disabilities when we had her in school and they recommended homeschooling. She struggles with the physical act of writing. Her printing is slow and messy and she has not yet learned cursive to a point where she is comfortable using it. She is also very weak in spelling, several years behind. She has been doing Latina Christiana II this year (mostly orally) and has no trouble with the grammar concepts she encounters there. She is quite bright, reads far above grade level and likes making up stories orally. She likes the idea of learning the skills to write them down. She has learned to type but is not very fast yet.
Although she is the age for Older Beginners, I am concerned about her weak areas making it frustrating for her, especially if I try teaching her with her older brother. I am considering starting her in Aesop, since I have it it for the younger brother anyhow. Probably I should add a spelling program. Do you have recommendations? And we would continue _Handwriting without Tears_ which we like very much.
Does this sound right? If so, should she start Aesop right away? Another option I have considered is to wait until fall and just work intensively on spelling and HWT now. Should I try to teach her and the younger brother together? It would simplify scheduling. On the other hand, she could probably move through it faster on her own.
I hope this is enough information to convey my situation and that you can make recommendations. Thank you.
Jayne
