We're very excited to be starting Maxim after finally finishing Homer! We have Hamlet and Henry V on our reading lists for history/great books this year; can we substitute those for the ones listed in Maxim without causing a problem? We're happy to read Ben Franklin, by the way!

You can certainly read other works of Shakespeare. In Maxim, students work with speeches from Merchant of Venice and Julius Caesar. Reading the plays gives them the 'big picture' of the situation of the speech. If you substitute other plays, they'll miss that. It wouldn't work well at all to use speeches from other plays in place of the ones we've selected.
If it's possible to read all four plays this year, that would be the best solution.

I agree with Carolyn's response and just wanted to add that one way to deal with all four plays is to get Julius Caesar and Merchant of Venice on DVD from the library. That way you can watch each one in one evening.
