My ds (11) is just starting with Homer and will be doing it in one year. . For Day 2 Dictation we are referred to Aesop for instructions. We did not previously use Aesop. What do I need to know for choosing how much of the model to use for dictation? Thank you

My ds (11) is just starting with Homer and will be doing it in one year. . For Day 2 Dictation we are referred to Aesop for instructions. We did not previously use Aesop. What do I need to know for choosing how much of the model to use for dictation? Thank you Personally I would start with just once sentence. I would read it a couple times through and see if they could then write the whole thing without having it repeated. If they need it repeated then I would camp out, just using one sentence until they could hold it in their mind and write out the whole thing. If they can write the whole thing without it being repeated the first time then I would pick out either a longer sentence or two sentences next time.
Dictation works on multiple skills at once: listening skills, handwriting, spelling, holding things in memory and thinking while writing. Not many skills work on so much at once, in with so little effort.
The one exception I would throw out is with children who have LD's, especially LD's that effect memory. You might need to repeat the sentence more often. You don't want the child to be frustrated.
