Hi all,
I'm wondering if anyone could share how they evaluate during this poetry unit. So far, I've just been checking off "completed" for each day of the Analysis and Imitation. I generally mark out of 10 for the Composition (per day) but it's more by gut feeling than specific criteria.
Any thoughts?

Juanita,
After thrashing the issue for several weeks, I did something similar to what you described. I never did find the time to work up an objective evaluation for the A&I, so I just marked that it was completed. When we wrote compositions here's what I looked for:
1. Were instructions followed i.e. was everything that was supposed to be in the composition included? 2. I looked at the way transitions were used and how skillfully they were employed. 3. Grammar and overall sentence structure 4. Mechanics
We spent most of our editing time working on transitions, so I gave that the most weight in my son's evaluations. However, if I were evaluating grammar level students, I'd probably give equal weight to each of the four points.

Juanita,
For working just with my own students, my aim is proper scansion and meter analysis and good imitation, following the instructions of the lessons.
Personally my students work until the poem they are creating on Day 4 is of good quality, until it "clicks" with whatever last word or two was troubing them. Sometimes we resurrect last week's poem to improve the following week when we can look on it with fresh eyes.
At this stage the end product and the process being done are my only criteria... the goal being the flex the student's language and since I don't have to report to anyone, I don't feel a need to measure my students' accomplishments by setting up a specific evaluation process for poetry.
Are you teaching a co-op or are you in some other setting where you have a need to do an objective evaluation of the work done each day?
Thanks for posting and asking,
Lene

Hi Lene,
No, I'm not in a co-op. Part of the motivation is that I've been using Homeschool Tracker and the grading is right in front of me. Part of it is that my kids like to see how they are doing and since my oldest is in gr. 7, it's nice to see some consistency in marking and evaluation. I'm not sure that either of those are the best reasons but it was just something I had been thinking about and wondering what others did.
Thanks.
Juanita
