I am considering CW Aesop for my dd this summer. I have read every question/answer on FAQ. With that in mind, please pardon my ignorance...... In our homeschool adventure we have not done a spelling program. DD has learned words she knows how to spell only through copywork ala CM suggestions. I have come to the point where I would like to add a SP. With no previous guidance from a spelling program is this going to hinder her when she starts the CW Aesop? Also, is it spelling workout that is recommended? If so, I was looking through my Rainbow Resource catalog and saw that Spelling Workout from MCP and one called Spelling Workout 2001. Whcih one is it? Just wondering......thanks

Thanks for your question. You're right, we do not cover this in our FAQ AS far as a spelling program goes, I think it depends entirely on how she does in spelling. If she is a natural strong speller with no difficulty with her phonograms and a good sense of spelling from her memory of reading, you'd just want to take her through a spelling program to increase her skills at whatever level she is at. On the other hand, if she is one of those kids for whom spelling does not come so naturally, you should select your program carefully. CW Aesop teaches spelling a little bit through choosing words from the weekly selection of literature that we work through. This proves to be useful for most of the kids, who go through our books, since the vocabulary in Aesop's Fables seems to fit the age group and their ability to spell. The few students, who struggle with spelling, just practice their spelling on easier words in the weekly model. If you start CW Aesop with no spelling program basics you should not have any trouble. We don't really require any proficiency for starting students other than being able to read beginning chapter books. As for spelling programs, there are many to choose from out there, many new ones I am not even familiar with. My kids (excepting my youngest who has special needs) are "beyond" spelling at this point. When I did teach spelling I also used Charlotte Mason and copy book. Then I transitioned into Spelling Work Out. My kids liked that because of the puzzles and other fun exercises. Once they started getting almost 100% correct in 95% of those lessons, we quit spelling. They all spell well and have only a few recurrent spelling errors "ie" rule still confounds one student, and also whether words end in -or,-ar, -er or in -ent or -ant. CW doesn't officially recommend any particular spelling program. CW Aesop references Writing Road to Reading a little bit. I never used it. I used Spelling Work Out and Spelling Power (which is a diagnostic tool where you tend to teach specifically to the student's spelling errors). Any program that helps your student over her spelling hurdles would be recommended. I doubt it matters so much which program you use, as much as it matters that you are consistent in helping her see her errors and learn the rules that will prevent those errors. HTH, Lene

In answer to your question about the listings in the Rainbow Resource Catalog, both programs are from MCP. Spelling Workout 2001 is a revision of the 1994 version. Extremely little has changed. Basically, they have moved away from the sports theme, and changed some formatting. Since the newer version is cheaper, I switched to it. This is probably too late, because if you're anything like me, you've already decided on a program and purchased it, but maybe this will be helpful to someone.
